The Photographer

DSC_0043_1.jpg - largeI've always been pretty heavily into Visual Arts. At school I studied Film and TV, Art and Music, basically out of pure enjoyment.

I suppose I was naturally good at it, but academically speaking, I had always figured my grades had reflected my love of what I did as opposed to any sort of ability.

I did a fair bit of photography during that time, and some basic darkroom techniques but I didn't actually own a camera until my 25th birthday. It was a Nikon FG20 which belonged to a mate of mine who wasn't using it anymore.

I shot everything, as you do, and I had so many great ideas. I learnt pretty quickly that film cameras can be unforgiving. I made alot of mistakes but learnt a whole lot.

Around February 2000 my partner and I had decided we would leave home and travel around Australia. We quit our jobs, put our stuff into storage, said goodbye to our friends and family and left.

Just after we left my perception of life changed. For the first time I was free from the constraints of work and the mundane routines of day to day life and I was ready to pursue my dreams. From that time on photography has been a major part of my life.

If I'm not behind the lense I'm constantly processing images in my head and compiling new material with every moment that passes. My world is filled with never ending moments that need to be captured. Loads of amazing shapes and lines, colours and textures, tints and shades, contours and depths.

I thoroughly enjoy what I do, and I love the way photography enables me to present my perspective of the world within something as simple as a photo. Creatively, and more importantly, I find it necessary to breach the barriers of photography and art.
I gain great personal fulfilment from exploring the creative process involved with each image I produce.

I truly hope that I can continue to evolve my photography and I truly hope that one day my images will be enjoyed by people all around the world.
